96 Accord V6 running rough after cap & rotor change?...Timing issue?

I was waiting in a parking space for a friend for 10 minutes and my 96 accord was running hot (temp gauge at 3/4) and I noticed some stem under the hood. I checked under the hood and the fan was not on and I could see a hairline crack on the radiator causing the steam. I let it cool down and then drove home with the temp gauge fluctuating from normal (1/3) to hot (3/4). At home I sealed the crack with putty and filled the radiator back up with coolant (needed 1/2 a bottle). I waited 24 hours for the putty to seal and test drove it 15 minutes and the coolant was leaking slightly but not steaming as before. I parked it with the plan to replace the radiator the next day but when I tried to start it, it would not turn over. I eliminated fuel delivery, the electrical lights on dash worked when the ignition is at on position, and I checked the oil which showed no signs of white coffee residue (ie. head gasket/ head damage). I already had a new rotor and cap so I removed the old one which was very worn out and replaced it. I tried to start it up and now it reluctantly turned over but it was running really rough. I turned it off and pulled a plug and it had alot of black carbon build up with a strong gas odor and looked pretty worn even though I replaced them about 6 months ago. The oil looks clean of any white residue still. Does this seem like a timing issue possibly? I didn't think me replacing the rotor %26amp; cap would cause a timing problem since the rotor was removed by a screw and the shaft it was on seemed to be in a locked postion. On my car, I believe there is a bolt/screw under the cap on the block that adjusts the timing since my cap is secured in one postion and does not move. Does this seem like a timing issue from what I explained?....and can I adjust the timing myself or how much should that cost?96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
Do the basics, check the firing order, inspect and test the cables .96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
sounds to me like a firing order issue.if you have two wires in reverse of where they're supposed to be it will run just rough as hell and it will be hard to start.I would also take an ohm reading on the plug wires, it seems that they are not good, you shouldn't have a build up on them unless your burning oil. the other possibility is that you have a bad head gasket between cylinders,is it smoking white?96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
Here is a common one that we all make every once in a while: You sure you didn't get a couple of the plug wires crossed up when you changed the Distributor cap:

.

Also if your plugs are carbon-ed up they will need to be changed as well. Could be one or two of them fouling out on you.

.

Also good idea while at it to change the plug wires as well:

I always follow a rule of thumb when doing a tune up on my vehicles: Change the plugs, change the plug wires, change the rotor cap, change the distributor cap, change the coil wire and change the coil. Saves a lot of trouble down the road.

.

And if it has a timing belt every 100,000 miles change the timing belt. With a factory timing belt not some sub-standard after market belt.

Ok that was the easy fixes: If that doesn't work.

You might have blown a head gasket or, warped the head or burnt [bent] a valve when the engine over heated. It doesn't take much with these aluminum heads most cars are running to warp them.

.

Also these so-called new and improved [over the ones used years ago ] will blow on you in a heart beat with the least overheating.

These new improved head gaskets are NOT like the old head gaskets that you could get an engine so hot it would almost lock up on you and not blow [ the old ] the head gaskets.

.

Let's face the new engines might be more precision made and lighter: But when it comes to the stout department they just ain't got it compared to the older heavy lead sled engines of years past.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
i would,nt fool with the timing just now. go back over your work. are you sure the plug wires are on the right plug and the cap? what about the rotor, is it locked in place so it wont spin on it,s own? if all else fails then put number 1 piston all the way up and check the rotor. if the timing did,nt slip then the rotor should be pointing to number 1 plug wire on the cap.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
recheck your wires for proper firing of the cylinders and test the spark plug wires for proper resistance flow.

you CAN adjust the timing simply by moving the distributor cap. That's a likely culprit here. Loosen slightly, move fwd or back slightly as u do. I liked to put wheel bearing grease on the miunts to make sliding the distributor easier w/o going overboard so teh adjustments are in mm's with each push.

Lastly your air/fuel could be out of whack so hook up an OB scanner. Connection should be under the steering wheel or behind ash tray. 96 accord- do it yourself. I suggest u join some honda clubs to get better acquainted with the minor issues with specific honda owners. I have a 2007 now and still use my clubs.

maybe you have not put your Ht leads back on in order, HT means high tension, these are the leads that connect your cap to your spark plugs.

If you have some properly insulated piiers then you can remove one at a time( at spark plug end) while engine is running,if engine cuts out or slows right down when you disconnect then you know that that particu;ar one is in right place, if no difference is felt when you remove on then you know you then have mixed that lead up with another. make sure that you have well insulated pliers otherwise you will get quite a kick off the lead ! wont kill you though.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?
First off, just because an engine is running a little warm does not mean that it is over heated. If the temperature gage stayed within the operating range and never went into the red area, your engine was not over heated and no additional damage occurred.

I would suspect a bad spark plug from your description. When replacing a spark plug it is very easy to crack the porcelain insulator. Sometimes the crack may not even be noticeable. This would cause the plug to not fire correctly. Evidenced by only 1 spark plug misfiring.

If you had spark plug wires mixed up 2 or more cylinders would misfire. You can not have only 1 spark plug wire out of place on the distributor cap. Re-check your firing order on the distributor cap. If you find a mistake, replace the spark plugs on the cylinders effected.

How much does it cost to Change brake front wheel rotors?

I have a Mazda 626 and my car shakes a lot when i brake and am at a complete stop. Just wanted to know how much does it cost , roughly of courseHow much does it cost to Change brake front wheel rotors?
The price of new rotors has really come down in the last few years. That shouldn't be a real expensive rotor. Big hassle in removing the inter bearing and relubing everything, unless you are lucky enough to have %26quot;slip-on%26quot; rotors, in which case it is a snap. How much does it cost? They are all different, just call your autozone or napa dealer and get a price. Prices vary so shop around.

i changed the oil, put in new coolant, installed new tires, changed the rotors, and front brakes. then i added some fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank

    anything else i should change?

i havent checked the rear brakes because i dont know how to put on rear brakesI just got a car, what should i change besides the oil?
Timing belt even if it %26quot;looks%26quot; to be in great shape. Change it. Check out the car jack by actually lifting the car and use the wheel wrench to take off the nuts. Sometimes they lose these things and just toss in any old jack which does not necessarily fit or work(which does not help you when you actually need it to fix a flat tire) on the side of the road in the rain one night out in the middle of nowhere and you are half drunk and the girl is wanting it in the cab but you are no longer in the mood because %26quot;things are not going your way outside%26quot;.

All the filters. Check your vacuum lines and V belts and rad hoses. and your smelly pine tree air fumigator on the rearview mirror.

Oh, and check to see that the spare tire is actually one that fits onto the car. Nothing like finding you have a 4 bolt hole pattern to fit a Ford and you have a 4 bolt Chev.

Rear brakes are getting to the time they need to be inspected and possibly replaced as they would possibly be pretty thin by now. Do it before metal to metal contact which would ruin the drums. Grab a repair manual from the library to find out how to do them. It is not that hard.

Also have the battery condition inspected(a load test) and the charging system checked.

You might want to eye-ball the exhaust system especially around the muffler where most of the rust occurs to see if it is rusted through.

Also, eyeball the shocks to see if oil is leaking from them. Also you should have looked at the old tires and see how evenly they were wearing. If worn out on the insides or the outsides indicates a wheel alignment is needed as the car does not travel straight down the road. Wearing out in the centre means he had too much air in the tires.

Oh yeah. Do the windshield wipers work(and the washer)? Headlights, high beam %26amp; low beam, brake lights, backup lights, signal lights, horn?

A radio would be nice too.I just got a car, what should i change besides the oil?
There is no set instructions on what you should do,but I would change spark plugs, wires, dist. cap(if have one),oil filter, air filter, flush radiator, check and change belts if you notice cracking in them, and maybe timing belt if the mileage is high. This will take care of most stuff that may cause problems. This also makes all items done when you know they were done.I just got a car, what should i change besides the oil?
check the back brakes. if you don,t know how to put them on then just pull both wheel. if you get in a bind then you can look at the other wheel. check to see if it has grease fittings on the ball joints and tie rods. you might want to grease them. change the air filter, pcv valve, check the belts and all the hoses including the vacuum hoses.I just got a car, what should i change besides the oil?
Sounds like you are on the right track.

Your engine uses a timing chain instead of a belt but verify this with a Nissan parts dept.

Read the owner's manual font to back and make note of maintenance intervals.

Check the condition and tension of the drive belts.

Air filter? Perhaps check one or two spark plugs? If the look a bit worn it's inexpensive to change them.I just got a car, what should i change besides the oil?

Changing brake pads on HHR and turning rotors?

I have a 2006 Chevrolet HHR and I need to change the brake pads soon. I changed out the rotors for cross drilled and slotted rotors. Do I need to turn the rotors? Also, how do you change the brake pads? Are there caliper bolts that need to be unscewed?Changing brake pads on HHR and turning rotors?
For sure if you change the pads you should always change or resurface the rotors , otherwise your waisting your time and your brakes will never work properly causing more damage to the other brake components on the vehicle too. Not sure about if they've a special hex etc type of mounting screw but probably they do.

Not sure if you know this or not but try to remember when doing this type of work don't ever get grease or brake fluid on any pads or rotors bec grease or oil or brake fluids can and will cause severe contaminates and the brakes will burn causing the severe headaches.Make sure you wipe the rotors off with a smooth clean cloth before installing the new rotors or the callipers etc.

You DO NOT need to remove the center axle nut on this application. If you do, you risk damage to the hub %26amp; bearing assembly. BIG $$. Simply remove the caliper and caliper bracket. Spray generous amounts of PB blaster or WD-40 to the area around the hub. SMACK the OUTER SIDE of the brake rotor until it breaks free of the hub to remove. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

    Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

How much would a tune up cost me?

I have a 1991 Acura Integra and I live in new york. What would be the price range for a minor and/or major tune up, if i already had the oil and rotors changed within the last month. I dont know anything about cars and I dont want to look stupid when i pull up to a garage. How much would a tune up cost me?
Between 400-600 dollars, what you ahd done isn't involved in a tune up... Major tune up will be $1100How much would a tune up cost me?
    Tune Up:

    - Replace Spark Plugs (Use regular plugs, platinum plugs, iridium plugs?) Check on autozone or kragen site for pricing.

    - Replace distributor cap and rotor (Use factory parts or aftermarket parts?) Check on honda ,autozone or kragen website for pricing.

    - Replace oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve (extra). Also ask if they use factory parts or aftermarket. (Check websites for pricing)

    - Check all belts, hoses, ignition wire. (Should be included or free)

    - Check suspension, tires. (Should be included or free). Use common sense, some shop will persuade you to replace parts.

Don't feel pushed to do a service. If you do, drive away and find a different service shop.

Good Luck. How much would a tune up cost me?
A good vehicle inspection should include a few easy diagnostics as part of the inspection. Cleaning and tightening the battery cables if necessary, testing the battery, charging system, and starter draw, testing coolant strength, inspecting drive belt conditions, lights, block heater, wiper blades, and filling the washer bottle with winter solution are all part of a complete inspection.

Now that the basics are done, we need to add a couple more items. Have the air filter checked, varnish deposits cleaned from the throttle plates, and vacuum and coolant hoses inspected for cracks or chafing. Removing one sparkplug to check condition will give a good indication if they need to be changed. Even one misfiring sparkplug will decrease fuel economy dramatically. Of course, extra labour charges apply if new ones are required.

Using a scan tool to check for engine codes can tell a lot. On OBD II emissions vehicles (1996 and newer vehicles), it can help locate a misfire. The scan tool can also monitor oxygen sensor readings for quick response rates. Oxygen sensors degrade with mileage and there are many high mileage vehicles that could get better fuel economy with a new sensor. A quick look under the vehicle for poor exhaust system parts, oil leaks, and to check tire condition and pressure and the inspection is done.

A vehicle inspection pinpoints what items on your vehicle need service. Instead of spending money on a 'Tune Up', spend it on what the vehicle really needs. Here are a few more items that should be considered as part of routine maintenance.

Many engines use rubber timing belts that need changing at specified intervals. Forget to have it changed and you could be looking at bent engine valves and major repair costs.

Keeping a vehicle maintained is expensive enough without spending money on services not needed. After watching how vehicles and the automotive industry have changed over the years, I am convinced an annual vehicle inspection is the best guide to help owners save money on maintenance.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

How to control the fluctuation of energy in wind turbine?

Due to the change in the wind speed, the speed of the wind turbine rotor changes, so at the output we get variable AC supply which means we do not get exactly constant voltage and frequency.

It can be control by controlling shaft speed and at the output by varying the load (Resistance).

I need to submit a case study about that so tell me about any site or e-book where I can find comprehensive details about that. How to control the fluctuation of energy in wind turbine?
    Basically there are two methods.

For small turbines (a few kilowatts) the turbine runs at whatever speed it likes, depending on the wind speed. There is a separate electrical converter to change the generated power into AC at mains frequency and synchronize it with the mains.

There may be a simple device to limit the max turbine speed just to prevent mechanical damage - for example a mechanical brake or lock, or spring-loaded turbine blades that spill the wind when the wind speed is high.

Large turbines (producing of the order of 1 MW or more per turbine) run at constant speed, generate power at mains frequency, and are directly coupled into the electricity grid when they are working. The speed is controlled the same way as for conventional power station generators. Without getting lost in the practical details, if the turbine tries to run at the wrong speed it is fighting against the whole of the rest of the power that is being generated in the electricity grid, so it loses the fight. As the wind speed changes, the amount of power generated changes. If the wind speed is too low, the generator acts in reverse as a motor to drive the turbine. (Of course in practice the turbine would be stopped completely, instead of doing that for a long period of time).

The rotational speed for large wind turbines is usually slow (10 or 20 rev/minute) with a gearbox to spin the generator at a higher speed. The blades are variable pitch so they can work efficiently at different average wind speeds. How to control the fluctuation of energy in wind turbine?
Well I know on the small scale a diode capacitor set up will even out and regulate the frequency. Perhaps that might be a place for you to start? Hope I helped. And have you tried google scholar?

First make sure that there is not a retaining screw in rotor. Usually a little Torx or phillips. If there is no screw then spray the hub area with rust penetrant the get your BFH and give it a good whack in the hub area not the part that contacts the brakes avoid hitting the studs also. • How can you tell when it's time to replace the rotors?

I've had my brake rotors resurfaced once already, how can i tell if i need to replace them? can i have them resurfaced again? will it make them too thin? is there a chance i might not even have to touch the rotors, just change the pads? How can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
when your brakes don't last. How can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
Ask your mechanic or the guy in the machine shop to measure it for you. He should know if it's within safety standards. Check if it's bent out of shape, etc. All these depend on your driving habits, the type of car and the quality of your rotors and pads. If you have a muscle car and like to break hard, or if you drive a lot on mountain roads, it's a good investment to buy decent quality, heavy duty, vented rotors and matching pads.

The life you save maybe my own....How can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
Most manufacturers put out a minimum thickness for the rotors check that or go to a reputable aftermarket brand and they will also tell you the minimum thickness

To measure get some inside calipers (vernier preferably) to measure the thickness of the rotor at a number of pointsHow can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
Some rotors can be resurfaced and it is cheaper. Most brake shops prefer you buy rotors because there is a money factor and time involved.

The cost of resurfacing a rotor is around $15.00 each. Rotors on some cars are as little as 25.00 each. Is that price difference worth safety? In most cases the rotor has to come off of the car to be turned. There would be no change in labor to turn or replace. It actually takes longer to have your rotors turned. New ones are ready out of the box after cleaning them. Turning them takes 20 min. to a half hour each. Not good if your shop charges by time on the rack. At my shop, I prefer you buy new rotors because it is safer and the job is done right, the first time.

Hardly ever, unless the brake pads wear down to metal and damage it.Take it to a parts store and have them measure the thickness.

You must not forget about heat. There is a lot of friction on the brakes after all, that is how they stop the car. One job of the rotors is to dissipate heat.

Heat warps the rotors and also causes hard spots. Warped rotors will cause a pulsation in the brakes when they are applied. Rust is also a factor in replacing rotors. I have seen too many to count that have been rusted. I recommend every time you change pads or every other time at least. I know there is some expense there but, ask your self what is the cost of not stopping when you need to. How can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
it depends on how much they took off of them the first time they were turned. i believe i would just get onesHow can you tell when it%26039;s time to replace the rotors?
typically i would leave the rotors alone unless i feel 'shaking' in the steering wheel when I'm braking. Depending on the type of vehicle and how bad the rotors were initially the first time you had them turned, i would say that it is safe to have them turned twice. Also whoever turns them for you should measure them and let you know if they are safe to turn. Hope this helps

Question about break rotors and pads!?

Could you please explain in details the difference between regular break rotors and slotted drilled rotors. Also could you please explain the difference between semi-metallic and ceramic break pads. How do you know that you should change your rotors (any signs that will indicate that the rotors need to be changed?).

Please serious and respectful answers only. Don't answers if you don't have the appropriate knowledge, no stupid jokes, no nonsense. I have some questions that I need help with so only answer if you can help. Thanks in advance!Question about break rotors and pads!?
Slotted or drilled rotors reduce heat.

Ceramic pads last longer and don't build up the black dust like semi-metallic.

Rotors need to be changed if they are worn badly, or if they cause vibration when the BRAKES (not breaks) are applied.Question about break rotors and pads!?
slotted rotors stay cooler as do the ceramic pad also the the ceramic pads anr quiter as for changing if the rotor has grooves in it then changer them and for pads when they are an 1/8 inchQuestion about break rotors and pads!?
    what he said.

you'll only notice the difference if you're racing or driving an some other kind of extreme condition.

As for changing your rotors, you'll only need to do this if you're upgrading or you notice a shudder in the car when you brake. This indicates that the rotors are warped.

If they have groves in them you can just get them machined. cheaper.Question about break rotors and pads!?
Slotted rotors are better than stock rotors...... IF you have a need for them. Slotted rotors vent the gas build up and dust from the brake pads, and are a little more resistant to brake fade. If you race the car or have a specific need for a heavy duty brake system, slotted rotors could be good for you. Ceramic pads are more resistant to the effects of heat, and seem to last longer and not wear down quickly. Rotors should be changed when they no longer meet the minimum thickness requirement, or if they are scored deeply, which would require them to be turned down beyond the minimum thickness. Rotors today don't have a lot of extra thickness. You might get away with turning them once, but then they are more likely to warp when they get real hot, due to the rotor being much thinner.Question about break rotors and pads!?
slotted cool faster which help save the pads life and it does aid in help stoping better and faster in doing so and ceramic is harder and last longer also withstanding a higher temp...

has for knowing when to change the rotors you will need to know the safety spec's but guessing it like five sets of pads more or less depending on how it was drove and if the brake were changed before they did any grinding.... that would vary between cars but easy way to say it would be how thick it was when new and how thick it is when bad and i couldnt give you a number not having a book to look it up in here is some brake info it might help some

Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?

    Hi,

I just got front brake rotor changed for my toyota camry 96 and the service station charged me 260$ for that (labor =119 and part = 139). I wanted to know if that was overpriced? how much on an average a front brake (disk) rotor change would cost.

ThanksFront brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
The price is not out of reason if they had to change your rotors.

Typical costs for brakes: $30-$40. Rotors typically cost $50-$75/per rotor and I'm assuming you replaced both of them.

Labor charge for the brake job should be 1-1.5 hrs. Again $119 is not out of line.

So I'd say no I think that would be typically what you would expect to pay for a brake job requiring that the rotors be changed.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
It sure seems high.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
I would go on one of the auto parts stores websites like AutoZone.com, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA auto parts, PartsAmerica.com or any one of hundreds of websites selling %26quot;Toyota Auto Parts%26quot; (search Yahoo). Then fill in your car's year, make, model etc and check the cost of front brake rotors. Of course if the Toyota dealer did the brake job, the dealer parts cost will be higher by say 50%, but if you find they're charging 3 times as much compared to a name brand aftermarket rotor you price out, I'd take that price quote printout to the service manager and ask if they made a mistake on your parts charges. Also, you could go to any other Toyota dealer's parts counter and ask them how much it is for a brake rotor for your car.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
that price seems about right, I would hope they replaced both rotors or resurfaced one side and replaced the other though. and put new pads on. I would have charge ya 127.50 in labor, 58.22 for pads and resuraced the rotors would be included, if you had to have a rotor, then I would I guess they would run about 80.00 bucks.

How much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?

I just went for my NY inspection. They wanted to charge me $ 600.00 to change my brake and rotors. I drive a 2003 ford explorer. Does that seem about right? How much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?
Who's %26quot;they%26quot;? According to fordparts.com, front brake pads for your 2003 Explorer cost $97.49US (part number 4L2Z-2001-BA), and front brake rotors cost $89.67US each (part number 4L2Z-1125-AA). So, if we do the math here, that's $276.83US in parts alone. Since you mention NY, I'm assuming that labour rates in that area go for around $100.00US per hour. Typically, most dealers pay their techs 1.5 hours to replace front brake pads and brake rotors. That means at $150.00US plus $276.83US works out to about $426.83US plus taxes. That doesn't sound too far off from the $600 you were quoted if you add the taxes in. Hope this helps. How much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?
Wow umm rotors(sport ones) are about$250 for a 2003 Ford Explorer. And pads are about $85. that is an insane amount to charge for that simple of a job. i would buy the parts and find a friend that is somwhat mechicaly talanted. its so easy. im 16 and i can do it.How much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?
I think that's right...because i believe you have 4 rotors! rear and front. I just paid $320 to change my rotors and that was all just on parts and i only have 2 rotors. So i believe that's around the price. Look up the price of your rotors %26amp; Brake pads like on autozone.com and add the price for the repair which is like $50 something dollers per hr. which should only be an hr maybe 1 1/2 hours tops! How much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?
you can do it your self three or four times for that price ... front pads 25 bucks rear about the same rotors vary.. call any auto parts store and get a price for parts and you wil see.. most of the time a brake job just for pads start about 100 bucks which is high knowing what i know i do it all my self maybe a couple hundred but it sounds high .. call a few places ..... ask how much to replace it alll pads and rotors front and back....which hardy ever needed now if you dont need rotors which most of the time you dont unless you have wore them out or they been grinding.. you can look the price up autozone.comHow much does it cost to change your brake pads and rotors?
Rip off! If you can find someone to do the brakes and rotors for you do it. auto zone has the best price for those type of parts. Only paid $130.00 for brakes and rotors there and $80.00 for labor for the person to do it.

    Those sonofas are horribly annoying...

When I was trying to get that kind of rotor off I managed to get on it with a Ryobi cordless drill with the screwdriver tip on it, for the screws..

If it's how I think it is, you might be in a world of hurt...

    http://www.thepartsbin.com/images/perfth

If they are regular rotors like that they should just slide off, maybe a small bit of persuasion...

but if they are the kind where the studs don't go through the holes, then you'd need to remove the axel nut, probably use a slide hammer... loads of crap which is why I gave up on the front rotors for

    my dad's accord...

I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..

to remove thee nut/srew that holds the rotor. I took everything off and all that is left is that nut/screw but the rotor keeps rotating and that makes it impossible to take it off. Will putting the front of the car on jack stands help as I am changing the front rotors and am working on one side at a time?I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
I dont think jack stands will lock the rotors in place while you try to loosen the rotor's mounting cap screws. Best way is to use an Impact wrench. If you don't have access to an impact wrench, try using a long screwdriver inserted in one of the vent holes in the rim of the rotor. The rotor will rotate until the protruding screwdriver wedges itself against the floor. First, however, be sure you have new cap screws to use when you re-assemble. 2nd. Do not tighten the cap screws more than 1/8 turn once the rotor is properly seated. Use anti-sieze paste on the threads of the cap screws. I do not recommend using a vice clamp on the surface of the soft iron rotors. The rotors can be easily warped, knicked or damaged.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
Maybe you should have loosened them with the calipers on. Someone could hold the brake pedal. Maybe try putting a vice, c-clamp or vice grips on the disc. It's possible that one side has left-hand threads too.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
If you are talking about that single hardened phillips black screw, make sure you get a couple of new ones. I use an impact-hammer wrench to get them off (the kind that actually uses a hammer - not air powered - less chance that it will slip out). They are different metal than the rotor so sometimes they seize up. The head is about the size of a dime, but the screw itself is only about 1/4%26quot; diameter.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
put the caliper and pads back on and use a vice-clamp to hold the rotor still.

and you will need an impact hammer to remove the bolts on the rotor.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
    From the BMW service manual:

%26quot;REMOVING, RECONDITIONING AND INSTALLING BRAKE ROTORS

To remove the brake rotors, first remove the caliper and brake pads as described below...Unsing a hex wrench, remove the mounting screw from between two of the wheel bolt holes and pull the rotor off the hub...Use a soft faced mallet to free stuck rotor.

    CAUTION --

    Do not try to remove the rotor without first removing caliper assembly. EXCESSIVE FORCE MAY DAMAGE THE ROTOR OR THE WHEEL BEARING HOUSING.%26quot;

Some knucklehead using an impact wrench and not their brain is why none of my BMWs go to a mechanic. If the rotor is to be discarded, you can use water pump pliers to hold the rotor and use a solvent to loosen the nut. If you do this, make sure to clean the wheel bearing housing immediately afterwards to ensure you don't have to greese and repack.

The front of the car should be up on jack stands and level.

You should have the BMW Service manual in hand or at the very least the Bently book. Either is enourmously helpful - especially in situations like this.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..
Everyones answers will work - but since your that far along try placing two lug bolts in their holes and use a pry bar between them or something similar to hold the rotor in position.

or just use a impact wrench.

How thick should your rotors be?

ok so i have a 93 acura legend and i just changed my brakes but would like to know if i have to change my rotors. i usually change the rotors with the brakes at the same time but this time i did not. how thick should the rotors be? also is there a product i can spray on them to make them last longer or be more efficient. any info on rotors would be greatHow thick should your rotors be?
your minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotor itself, and spraying anything on the rotor is a bad idea. any brake quite i have ever seen or used goes on the back of the pad between the backing plate and the caliper/ piston itself. those rotors should last you longer than the life if a set of pads. btw you can pick up brake quite or something similar at your local p[art storeHow thick should your rotors be?
10w 30w oil will make them last longer and I'll bet they don't squeak either. How thick should your rotors be?
NEVER put oil on you rotors or pads!!!

Brake pad and rotor change advice?

    Mazda astina 1991.

Mechanic says my brake pads need replacing, they are 19mm, the minimum thickness is 20mm. Should i be worried, how quick do they wear down?

My quote states x2 brake pads, one $76, the other $93. Why isn't he using the same type of pads? Also, is he assuming i want the best quality ones, should i ask for cheaper?

Plus x4 rotors, $57 each. But he told me only the fronts needs replacing. Are there 2 rotors per wheel?

    labour $130

    total AUD$530

    !!

I have not noticed any vibrating or warping. Only a put-put-put kind of shaking sometimes, when i change gears, just feels like it's a bit cold, and i'm not using the brakes at that time.

Might get another mechanic to just replace pads and check how damaged the rotors are.Brake pad and rotor change advice?
From your listed prices you've been quoted cheap off-shore brake rotors. Go to: autopartswarehouse.com and invest in EBC dimpled and slotted brake rotors which are produced in Great Britain. While your at their site pick out ceramic based brake pads. Do the job yourself and save $200.00!Brake pad and rotor change advice?
You really need to get another quote. Brake pad and rotor change advice?
his quote is for a four wheel brake job... the pads come in sets for front and rear.... not individual wheels... even though he said the rears may be thick enough now most shops will machine them to make sure they are not warped - if there is a warp they try to machine it out and then they may be to thin... so just to cover their butt they include new ones in the estimate... there are a few shops that just replace them though so always make sure to check the bill before you pay

I do mine myself and can't machine the rotors so they just get replaced... depending on how you drive they should last 20,000 to 40,000 miles... if they can be machined at that point then you may get more out of them... hope this helps and good luck with itBrake pad and rotor change advice?
You are a dangerous breed my friend. Thank GOD you pile of junk is in another country as not to present a danger here.

20mm is spec and your at 19mm... Here if your involved in an accident and your car is inspected and found to be lacking in the brake area you get charged with criminal negligence.

The estimate is in the ballpark.

Dealer will charge a bunch for this. The good news is that there's nothing special about these brakes, and any competent mechanic can change them. Use an independent and save a bunch of money.

I'm currently using Pagid pads and ATE rotors on my E320. I believe those are the stock brands, and they aren't expensive if you buy from independents. Sound like you crossed wires.Check Firing order again.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 rotor turning clockwise.I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?
Was it Backfiring before you worked on it? If so, it sounds like it's jumped Timing.Does it still have the original Factory Nylon Sprocket on the Camshaft ? If so, one or more of the %26quot;Teeth%26quot; may have stripped off.One way to determine this is to remove the Valve Cover on the Driver's side of the Engine, remove the Spark Plug to the 1 Cylinder, which is in the front of the Engine on the Driver's side, and bump the Engine over, without starting it. Put your Thumb over the Spark Plug Hole, and you'll feel the Compression build up when the Piston comes to the Top. With the Piston at the very Top, and the Distributor Rotor Button pointing at the 1 Spark Plug Wire,[You'll have to remove the Distributor Cap to see that], and both Rocker Arms for 1 in the closed Position, look at the Timing Mark on the Harmonic Balancer on the bottom pulley of the Engine. It should be pointing somewhere close to the Timing Mark where you see the Timing Adjustment Settings. If it's not, and it's way off, then chances are that it's jumped Timing, and you're going to need a full Timing Kit, which consists of a Timing Chain, Camshaft Sprocket, Crankshaft Sprocket, and a Timing Cover Gasket. Everything on the front of the Engine has to come off to replace the Timing Set, so you want to make sure that's what it is before proceeding. I've done it, and I can tell you, it's a lot of work ! Make sure you have a Haynes Manual, and read it thoroughly before you start. That'll cost about $15, and will tell you exactly how to set the Timing, and replace the Timing Set. If you do it yourself, it'll cost about $50, maybe less, and it'll take several Hours, maybe a couple of evenings, if you're doing it by the Shadetree. If you pay a Repair Shop, it's going to cost around $250 to $350 easy, but make sure you know what you're doing before you attempt it.Try polkan47's Answer first.I hope he's right, cause it'll save you a lot of Hasle ! Hope this helps !I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?
i agree with polkan47.their is a olds rocket 350 with a different fireing order but in your case it is 18436572 in clockwise rotation.I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?
Yes, you have to dis-connect the brown wire behind the plastic cover on the firewall underneath the hood. Before timing it to ZERO timing provided the ECM computer is still hooked-up. Once you have the timing set on ZERO, re-connect the brown wire and you should be good to go.

Below is a search I did over @ fullsizechevy.com on setting the timing. See if, this can help you w/ your issue.

Good luck!I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?
I own a shop, and since yours is this old, you probably have a worn out camshaft. The symptoms are: It runs fine until you give it gas %26amp; get it under a pull, and then it backfires through the intake (most common) or the exhaust. Remember; timing doesn't get off by itself, and one that jumps on the gears will ( 99% of the time) not run at all, and/or will backfire all the time, not just when you give it gas. The best way to diagnose this problem is to use a vacuum gage attached to manifold vacuum source. You are on the right track by thinking its in the ignition timing, and it could be if you changed the plug wires, and then the problem showed up. Other suggestions on how to set the timing is correct, but you will more than likely find the timing is dead on. The most common causes are: EGR system not functioning properly, Vacuum leak, Damaged valve springs or sticking valves, and the Intake gasket leaking. To properly diagnose the problem, I would suggest running a vacuum test, a compression test, and a leak down test. It will more than likely show up on the vacuum test, and you will need a chart to interpute the needle readings. Since you have replaced the plugs %26amp; wires, and cap %26amp; rotor, then if the engine has a lot of miles on it, then you more than likely have a worn camshaft.

One final thing that is not so common on these vehicles is; The distributor may be worn out. Remove the cap, grab hold of the rotor, and see if you can move it from side to side. There should be no, or very tiny amount of movement. When the bushing (in the top of the distributor) gets worn, the shaft will flop around, which opens %26amp; closes the air gap between the reluctor %26amp; magnetic pick-up. This will cause the ignition timing to be all over the place, and when you give it gas it will move to one side from the torque on it from the camshaft %26amp; oil pump. This will also (sometimes) wear the gear on the distributor that runs on the camshaft. If this happens, then its just like a rearend that has too much backlash in it, and it prematurely wears out the gear due to improper mesh between the two. The camshaft gear is much harder than the distributor gear, thus it doesn't wear it. This can be a serious problem as it will cause metal from the gear to be introduced into the oiling system. Any metal in the oil will wreak havoc on the bearings, cam %26amp; lifters, and rings. It can also severely damage the oil pump. I would pull the distributor out, and replace it with another one. If you use one that has been used before, then you must replace the distributor gear with a new one, or it will wear out pretty fast. This sometimes is the case with an engine that has a roller cam, and the cam is walking inside the block too much due to the thrust button/bearing wear. This will also cause the cam to walk enough for the timing chain to hit the block, and in some cases wear a hole in the block behind the chain %26amp; gear.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?
First thing to check is that you don't have your wires crossed either on the spark plugs or the cap. This can happen quite easily and engine will do exactly what you describe. Check these carefully before getting too carried away

How often do you need to change the break rotors on you automobile?

If you change the pads before they are gone and the steel plates eat into the rotors you may not have to change them at all. • How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?

car broke down and been told it needs changing, is it simple enough to do my self? How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?
Yes this is simple as long as you are careful....

An old trick to imobilise a car was to remove the rotor arm...

The distributer cap is usually black or grey and looks like the bottom of a large Coke bottle.

The HT Leads come out of the distributer and connect to each spark plug.

There sould only be a couple of clips on each side holding the top on.

If you take it off you will see the rotor arm. It looks like a small handle and spins round to the contacts for each spark plug etc..

    If should just lift off.

In order to get a replacement check with somewhere like halfords or look up a haynes manual for your model car and the engine that you have.

It is important the you get the right one.

Good luck !How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?
i think u just take of the distributor cap and replace the rotor arm inside. dont take of the ht leads incase u mix them up putting back on. just unclip the clips and take off cap with leads attacthed

It's not really a problem, other than that your brakes will look smaller in proportion to the wheels. 18%26quot; wheels add a little weight, but not enough to demand a brake upgrade. If i put 18%26quot; rims on my 1998 chevy malibu do i have to change the whole brake system?

Your braking distance will dramatically increase due to increased rotational inertia. Another poster sited a BMW - but a BMW has much better brakes than a '98 Malibu.

How to change toyota matrix rotors?

The EBC rotors that I have are correct for the car. But I can not get the old rotors off. It looks like I have to take the hub nut off to get the rotors off. I contacted someone from Toyota and they said %26quot;the rotors should just slide off and it just might be rusted on%26quot;.(Yes I have taken everthing off correctly). I just need an answer. Thank youHow to change toyota matrix rotors?
the hub nut does not connect the rotor to the hub and if you losen that nut and do not tighten it properly you will need two front wheel bearings as well the best way to get off the rotor is to smack it will a good sized hammer from the back side be carfull not to send it across the garage if you hit it a couple of times it should then slide off also it would be good to list the year and if it is 4wd or not but either way it is the same in this caseHow to change toyota matrix rotors?

I've got a 02 xterra that's needs both and am not a big DIYer but I'd like to beHow hard is it to change your front rotors and brake pads?
If you'd like a quick primer, go to your public library and dive into a Chilton or Motors Manual that concerns your specific car. If you get lucky any auto-parts store will have Haynes, or Chilton manuals specific to a number of years of all Nissan Cars. I do not think the manual will be specific to an Extera.

As for tools, a few shallow well half inch drive metric sockets, 12 mm. - 17mm. , a 1/2 drive ratchet wrench, and a large C- clamp or a Jorgensen - carpenters slider C clamp, jack stands, a hydraulic floor jack (safer than a bottle jack) is all you need.

    1. Slightly loosen all the wheels.

    2. get the vehicle up on jack stands

    3. Remove front wheels.

    4. Remove brake caliper. 2 cap-screws are on the back side of the caliper bracket.

    5. Two cap screws need to be removed to release the caliper bracket from the wheel spindle.

    6. Rotors may need a tap on the back side to break them loose because of rust and corrosion.

    7. Using an old brake pad in front of the piston inside the caliper, position your clamping device behind the brake caliper and screw the clamp which forces the caliper piston back inside the bore.

    8. When replacing the rotors, paint on a small amount of Permatex Never Seize on the entire surface of the rotor where the lug holes meet the hub. The rotors will never stick again. If you plan on keeping your vehicle more than 3 yrs. Do not buy cheap off - shore brake rotors. They are often machined to minimum thickness, the cast iron is of poor quality, they rust and corrode quickly and they warp easily. Go for AC Delco, Wagner or EBC brake rotors. autopartswarehouse. com has Beck Arnley ceramic brake pads which include brake shims. Be careful what you choose for brake pads as most do not include the anti-rattle shims which add to the cost of your job.

9.If your selection of ceramic pads does not include the shims there's another way to stop brake squeel. Buy a plastic bottle of CRC Brake Quiet at NAPA, Car quest, or Auto Zone. On the steel side of the front pads first, spread a .090 thickness of this high temp silicone covering 100% of the steel side. Let it dry for 20 minutes.

Slide the rotors back on and bolt up the caliper bracket.

Re-assemble the pads inside the caliper or sit them inside the caliper bracket and bolt the caliper in place.

I have a 1997 ford explorer ..I know how to change the pads but how do i change the rotor?Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?
once the wheel is off and you have removed the caliper and break pads the is two anchor bolts that hold the caliper mount on. After that the rotor comes right off. The only thing that keeps the rotor on is your rim and lug nuts. The bearings will not come off. They are inside the hub.Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?
Remove the pads, take off the caliper anchor 2 bolts, remove grease cap, pull out cotter pin, undo nut, and pull out rotor, being careful to catch the outer wheel bearing in your hand. When you reassemble clean up the bearing races and repack all bearings. Use new grease seal and cotter pin when you reassemble.Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?
Just to add to old guys answer. I've never bought a new rotor but if it does not come with the races installed it can be a pain in the ***. You have to tap them in carefully and slowly and make sure they are fully seated. You can do it just takes a little time and patience. Same with the inner seals. And when u put the nut back on it only goes on hand tight and if the hole for the cotter pin does not line up, back it off, not tighten it, till it does. Doesn't take much know how.Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?

Make sure the rotors will work with your car's ABS system if that's a consideration. Also, you need to wash the new rotors in hot soap and water thoroughly to remove the machining oils. The rotors should have a %26quot;non-directional%26quot; swirl finish you can apply yourself. Can anyone give me a walk through on how to change the front rotors on an 03 BMW 525i.?

How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?

i know i need my front brakepads changed in my 2002 mustang but does that mean that i need to change those rotors too? is there a way that you can tell? my mustang has 90000 miles on it and from what i know i never had the rotors replaced. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
Rotors are so cheap these days that you might as well replace them, they will give a nice smooth but firm feel in the brake pedal. 90000k IS WAY PAST DUE especially if you live in a city. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
well the miles says it all, you have gotten the life out of those rotors and if there warped, you can feel it in the pedal or a jerky motion when it stops, you might not be able to resurface them and then its time to changeHow do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
If you havn't abused the rotors with worn pads meaning metal to metal and there are no groves on them you could replace only the pads. I believe there is a tollerance for the rotor thickness. do a search on rotor thickness. best of luckHow do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
The only reason you would have to change the rotors would be because you let the brake pads wear down to the point of damaging them. I, too, drive a Mustang (albeit a '68) and my rotors are about 12 years old. I just had them checked to be sure, and they're fine. Regular maintenance pays off again.

If you can HEAR your brakes when you use them, then I'd definitely replace all. Best to be safe. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
First, do they look smooth? No ripples or grooves, just a nice smooth flat surface.

Second, you must measure the thicknesss of the rotor and check that against the specs. for that car. Some times it is cast into the rotor as a discard thicknes. A brake spec. book will also give a %26quot;Machine To%26quot; thickness minimum.

Finally, thickness variation and run out would be another reason. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
Well if you know you need pads the odds are you need rotors ,with 90,000 on the car.The rotors they put on cars now are what you call throw aways,or what I like too call them as Ginsue'sJunk.Back in the day you could get them turned down but I bet if you go to your local auto parts there probably pretty cheap.30 or 40 bucks a peace.A good indicator is a pulsation in the break peddle meaning there warped. So even if you get them turned down thinner to clean them up they have a tendancy to warp again quicker due to friction. If you can even get them turned down due to grooving, how warped they are,and the allowed spec to turn them to there thinest.I dont even deal with it anymore.Alot of shops dont even mess with it. The older cars back in the day had really meaty rotors, and made of good steel, making it possible to get a turn down on them.I found it better just to change them under this circumstance.Good luck pretty easy job while you have the calipers off.How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
If the rotors cannot be turned they must be replaced. The criterion is determined by measuring the thickness. Too thin and they get too hot. It is also necessary to replace in the case of a crack.

BUT new rotors are always better. Get the prices and compare--deducting the cost of turning which the new ones won't need. You may have a little difficult seperating them from the hubs, but you'll manage. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?
You have to measure them. There are standards for brakes so they don't fade under high stopping speeds. Check the thickness (the throw out standard is stamped on the side of the rotor) and replace accordingly. If you buy new rotors, they would probably last another 90k miles and it would be money well spent.

Front rotors have the integral bearing race and removing the spindle nut is necessary.

Rears are tircky becuase you cannot use your Ebrake when working to remove the rears.....EBrake is located at the circumference of the hub assembly....the so rotor is a disc and a drum.....

Tap the rotor while turning and pulling, it should come off....take this time to check the Ebrake drum surface....if it needs turning, get both the disc surface and the drum surface done at the same time.

You should have rotors turned anytime you installed new pads anyway. It helps them last longer and gives you better braking. How hard would it be to change front/back rotors on 2002 explorer?

You shouldn't need to change the rotors on a car that new. You should just be able to replace the brake pads. I'm obviously not familiar with your situation. But, if you don't have damage to the rotors or severely excessive wear, you should leave them as they are. Rotors can also be turned before they need to be replaced. The best thing to do is buy a repair manual for your vehicle. Most auto parts places stock books by Chilton or Hayes and those books have instructions and diagrams for every part of your car. These books are very helpful for everything from routine maintenance to complete overhauls, and only cost16-20 bucks. They have helped me save tons of money, by allowing me to do myself what a mechanic would charge $60+ an hour to do. Good luck. How to change brake rotors...?

How to change front rotors on 1995 honda acord?

Take the tire off. There are either two or four bolts holding the caliper on the rotor. Unbolt the caliper and swing up and out of the way. Be careful not to pinch the brake line. There is a small cap in the center of the hub. Remove the cap and you will see a large nut with a cotter key in the middle. Straighten out the key and use pliers to remove. After the key is removed then remove the large nut. That will allow you to remove the rotor. When you put the new rotor on don't forget to put the outside wheel bearing and the flat washer back on before replacing the nut and cotter key. Takes a little time but is not that hard to do. Good luck...

  • How hard is it to change the struts on a 90' Firebird, what has to be done?

Ive changed brakes, rotors, and that kind of thing, so was wondering how hard it would be to change the struts my self. How hard is it to change the struts on a 90%26039; Firebird, what has to be done?
You don't need a spring compressor to change the struts.. Your not removing spring.

Place a floor jack under the lower A arm, jack up, place stand under it.

Take wheel off, take caliper off (don't loosen the brake hose though) sit or hang caliper so its not pulling on brake line.

Open hood up, on each side of car is a strut tower with a black strut bearing mount with a cone looking thing on top.. Pop that cone shaped cover off.. Remove the large nut you see in there.

Now back to the wheel side. You have 2 large bolts holding strut to spindle.. Also the brake line is help to strut with a clip.. Remove that clip, then take the 2 strut to spindle bolts off.

Lift up on the strut to compress it and move it off the mount, now left it go down and just pull it out.

On new strut put top rod through 1st, hand start the top nut, then pull strut down and put 2 lower bolts on..

The lower bolts needs to be torqued to 125 ft lbs then turned 120 degrees more

Top nut is then torqued to 44 ft lbs

Put caliper and well back on.How hard is it to change the struts on a 90%26039; Firebird, what has to be done?
not to hard you will need some spring compressors, or you wont be abel to do it. just take all the bolts off to the strut, use 1 or 2 spring compressors for each side and compress the spring.

should be simple just be carful they can be dangerous and deadly if the compressor slips off.

How often are you supposed to change your brakes?

I have a 2000 BMW 323i. Anyone know on average how often I am supposed to change the brakes? (BMWs have to change the rotors as well as the pads everytime....so its really expensive.)How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
BMW's have to change the rotors so often because they are %26quot;Soft%26quot; and the pads eat through them.

Your e46 BMW is equipped with pad sensors that will tell you when you are getting close to needing your next brake job done.

Just to inform yourself more about your 3 series you will find that http://www.e46fanatics.com is a great resource for your auto.

It is a good idea to check them once a month with a quick visual check.

Typically with alot of high way driving you can go alot longer without replacing your pads. If you do alot of city driving you will find that you must replace them more often.

Regardless it ultimately is left up to whether you do a lot of heavy braking or downhill driving. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
It all depends on the driving habits and the vehicle. There is no set period of time or mileage to overhaul brakes. Most vehicle have a little device that tells you via a warning light or a little metal tab that ride against the rotor when you apply the brakes and make a screeching sound until you let off the peddle. I have heard that about BMW's, yes very expensive. You might try an independent mechanic and see what he can do for you.How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
roughly every 40-50,000 miles. you should replace your pads, and rotors only need to be replaces if damaged or warped. they should last a very long time.

There is no reason for you to replace your pads and rotors every time you get brakes serviced unless you race your car or possibly drive with one foot always on the brakes. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
replace them when there about wore out, you need to have then checked at about 30,000 miles and then the mechanic will be able to tell you about how much longer you have before they need changed. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?

I have a 2000 firebird (v6) warped rear disc brakes. Also, how important is it to bleed the brakes. On my 90's camaro I never bled them and never had a problem. Please help me out.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no the rotors should come right off. if you don't open up the hydraulic part of the brake system you shouldn't have to bleed them.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
Damn!! I should know this answer, I learned it in class today. My guess is since your replacing the pads and rotors you might as well replace the bearings, I think you have to replace the bearings every 30,000 miles.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
normally, I clean them and inspect them .any, I say any ,mark I replace them ,otherwise they are good. re grease them(repack) and install them.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no, no bearing removal is required, but check for lateral movement, and as far a brakes go no bleeding is not required unless you breach the system,Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
once you get the brake calipers off the rotors will come right off, you won't have to remove any bearings. The brake fluid should by all rights be flushed out every couple of years as moisture gets into the brake system and can cause havock with the ABS system.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
basically speaking.. u should not have to replace the bearing on a rear disc brake assembly, it depends on if u have a top hat design or integral design.. if u have top hat then u just pull off the rotor and replace the rotor and put on the caliper and wheel and such.. also.. bleeding your brakes is very important because your brakes absorb water because they are hygroscopic.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no...you will not need to change wheel bearings....although if you are going to have the rotors off anyway, you may want to. your brakes should not have to be bled after replacing rotors and pads.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
You will have to remove the bearing to get the rotor off.Pack the bearing with grease before you put them back. You shouldnt have to bleed the brakes.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???

No. you don't need to replace them. The bearing almost never goes bad and usually last the lifetime of your car. Replace it if you hear noise from it, like it is not lubricated. Bled the brake only if you remove the tube that goes to the wheel and you lost some oil (on the floor). Usually, to replace a brake, do not unscrew the oil pipe. Before you remove the rotor, insert a crew driver between the pads and push the piston inside the caliper. The pads came loose and with enough space to insert a new ones.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
A fire bird is rear wheel drive, so you would have to take apart the rearend and remove the axels to replace the bearings. So, you just need to leave that alone. The brakes are pretty straight forward. Pull off the rotors and slide new ones on. rear calipers usually need to be turned in, not pushed in like front calipers. look at your piston face ( the part that pushes on the pad) You should see 2 to 4 indents on the outer edge. these are engaged by a special tool used to turn them in. I've used channel locks as a last resort. Be careful not to rip the boots. You can probably rent a rear piston pusher at autozone. If you dont open the brake line you will not need to bleed them, but it is a good idea to bleed out the old fluid once in awhile to keep it fresh because it does absorb moisture from the air.

My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?

My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?

When I break after driving 50+ MPH, my car shakes. This does not really bother me, but I wonder if it could lead to something more serious. Can it? And what would I have to change and how much would it cost? Thanks!!!My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
I had the same problem and I had mine shaved down just to give myself a little time before they needed to be changed and after that it was about 4 years before I had them replaced. You don't want to mess with brakes and they will only warp more as time goes by but you can always ask the opinion of a trusted mechanic as to whether you have some more ware left on them. Once you do change the rotors, you will most likely need to change the pads too.

Good Luck!!My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
you can have them machined down to take the warping out of them and that's cheaper than buying new ones on it ,it helps to tell us the kind of car your working on sometimes this way you can get a lot better answer, if you have them turned they will replace the pads and turn the rotors for about 75-100 bucks, good luck on it.My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
No shop out there will change the pads and machine rotors for 75-100 dollars. If they do, they use inferior pads like autozone or raybestos. I'd spend the additional 50 dollars and get some Centric Ceramics. For 140-150 dollars you can get high quality pads and rotors resurfaced. My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
it really depends on how the rotors look, and how much life you have left in your pads. if you are going to need to get new pads in 5-10k miles then you should just wait. you might be able to just turn the rotors which would save you some money. you can go with a/m rotors but i would stick with a pad that is made by the manufacturer rather than a a/m pad. the a/m pads always make noise. My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
It could be your rotors or your drums may be out of round if you car is equiped. My car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
yes rotors need to be replacedMy car shakes when I brake. Should I change my rotors?
if your steering wheel is shaking too, yeah its the rotors

My 2005 Kia Sedona has two torque screws in the rotors. I cannot remove them with my screwdriver. Wondering if there is an easier way to extract them as I've never changed rotors with these screws thru them before. How do I remove the screws in a 2005 Kia Sedona front rotor?

How do i change the rotors, condenser and coil on my car?

i dont know much about cars, and if someone could possibly tell me how to on my 62 galaxie. i dont live near any mechanics and i can learn by startin with this. i was able to drive this old ford for about 5 days straight before it stubbornly refused to start. i already changed the spark plugs and wires.

i drive this car everyday and im not givin up yet, these problems dont discourage meHow do i change the rotors, condenser and coil on my car?
well you have a points style ignition and it sounds like the points need resetting, i can't go in to it but you should go and pick up an old repair manual for your car it will give you the instructions you need to do this. How do i change the rotors, condenser and coil on my car?
A repair job on anything at all should always begin with checking the very simplest and most obvious things first. The very first thing I would check is the battery. Turn the headlights on for about a minute at night and watch to see if they start fading. If they do, then you have a weak battery that may need a charge or replacement. If they stay bright, go on to the next thing, which would be the ignition.

When you first turn the key, does it make any sound at all. If it makes a repeated clicking noise, that means that the ignition is passing electricity through to the starter alright, but the starter isn't turning over to catch.

So, the problem MAY be with your starter, or with the starter solenoid. Take the starter out and take it to a shop to have it checked. If it's o.k., put it back in.

Then the problem MAY be with the voltage regulator, the coil, or the distributor. All three of those have something to do with regulating electricity. These are fairly cheap-if you can find replacement parts for such an old car.

If you discover that the problem in in the distributor, those parts should be cheap and easy find. You will need to replace everything in the distributor, such as the points, the rotor and the distributor cap itself, If you get new points, be sure to ask for the correct gap setting for them at the store. No more room to write. How do i change the rotors, condenser and coil on my car?
it only has 1 rotor which you just lift up on it and put the other 1 on the same way. as for the condenser your better off to change the points too. the condenser hooks to the points, probably with a little nut and it has a screw to hold it down. as for the coil, you have a long screw, loosen it and take the 2 wires off and the coil will pull straight out but remember the + is the ignition on the coil and the - goes to the distributor. How do i change the rotors, condenser and coil on my car?
Country boy, You need to remove the distributor cap and focus on the points. They open and close by the shaft seen inside. The best thing to do is ask around to see if you can convert the distributor to an electronic one. This NEVER needs points or any adjustments. It depends on the engine size and other factors. You will get better power and MPG's if you do this. The coil can then be updated to a more powerful unit!! WHat engine size is this???
